High school softball: Hensley, Burkart, Garrett lead Haughton to 1-5A victory over Byrd; Bossier wins


Shelby Hensley pitched a four-hitter, McKayla Burkart had three hits and Courtney Garrett homered as the Haughton Lady Bucs defeated the Byrd Lady Jackets 2-0 in a District 1-5A game Thursday at Haughton.

In another District 1-5A game, the Parkway Lady Panthers fell to the Evangel Christian Academy Lady Eagles 12-0 at Evangel.

In a non-district game, Bossier defeated Booker T. Washington 11-10 at Rusheon Middle School.

Haughton (8-9, 4-1) and Evangel (10-3, 4-1) are tied for second behind Airline (11-4, 6-0), which was idle Thursday. Parkway dropped to 8-5 overall and finished the first half of district play 2-4.

At Haughton, Hensley struck out four and walked only one in her gem. Burkart went 3-for-3 with two doubles.

Garrett gave the Lady Bucs a 1-0 lead in the fourth with a home run over the left-field fence.

Haughton scored its other run in the fifth. Hannah Borah led off with a walk. Leah Hopson’s hard grounder resulted in an error and advanced Borah to second.

Burkart then doubled to left, scoring Borah.

Hensley set the Lady Jackets down in order in the sixth and seventh.

At Evangel, Parkway hung with the Lady Eagles for the first three innings and trailed only 2-0. But Evangel exploded for 10 runs in the fourth.

Maecy Ingram had two of the Lady Panthers’ three hits, both doubles. Lauren Jones had a single.

At Rusheon, Mikayla Miller, Skylar Whittington and Chaye Granger all went 2-for-2 in Bossier’s win. Whittington was the winning pitcher.
