High school softball: Tough start for Airline, Haughton

The Airline Lady Vikings and Haughton Lady Bucs both lost season openers Monday at Louisiana Tech before the rains came.

Airline fell to West Monroe 9-6 in a rematch of a first-round Class 5A playoff game last season. The Lady Rebels won that game 4-3.

Airline was also scheduled to play Ruston but the game was cancelled because of the rain.

Haughton got both its games in, falling to Ruston 15-0 and West Monroe 12-4.

Airline jumped out to a 4-0 lead against West Monroe with four runs in the top of the second inning. But West Monroe answered with four in the bottom of the third and added three more in the fourth.

The Lady Vikings cut the lead to two with a run in the sixth, but the Lady Rebels added two more in the bottom of the inning.

Eight Lady Vikings accounted for Airline’s 10 hits. Freshman Caroline Easom went 2-for-3 with two RBI. Lexi Grey went 2-for-4. Jessica Baffuto had two RBI.

Airline begins District 1-5A play at Evangel Christian on Thursday. Evangel and Airline finished 1-2 in the district last season.

Savannah Salley got Haughton’s lone hit in the three-inning loss to Ruston. Lacey Dodson and Courtney Garrett had hits against West Monroe.

Haughton visits Benton in a non-district game Thursday.
