Haughton senior John Brown won the 400 meters in the Class 5A boys division at the LHSAA Outdoor Track and Field State Meet Saturday at LSU.
Brown was the only champion from a parish school but overall parish athletes turned in a strong performance in the 5A meet. Six individuals and one relay team made the awards stand by finishing in the top three.
Brown ran a personal record 47.37 seconds which ranks 61st in the nation this year. His previous best was 48.05. Baton Rouge High’s Chandler Sears was second in 48.16.
Benton senior Miller Malley came close to successfully defending his boys pole vault title but wound up second via a tiebreaker.
Malley and Barbe’s Carter Hooks both cleared 14 feet, 5.25 inches. But Hooks cleared it on his first attempt and Malley on his third.
Parkway sophomore Brennan Robin finished second in the the 3,200 and third in the 1,600. He ran a 9:13.26 in the former and a 4:17.58 in the latter.
Jesuit senior Brady Mullen won the 3,200 in 9:08.68. Catholic’s William Decuir took the 1,600 in 4:12.62
Airline senior Zion Smith was second in the boys 110 hurdles in 13.95. Jesuit’s Ja’ir Burks won in 13.65.
Haughton sophomore Joseph Encinas finished second in the boys 300 hurdles in a personal record 38.80. Burks won in 38.18.
The Airline foursome of Karliyah Woodard, Symauri Butler, Janiyah Boudreaux and Jaycie Wallace finished a very close second in the girls 4X100 relay in 47.93. That was just three-hundredths of a second slower than winner Ouachita Parish.
Parkway senior Devon Oliver capped his outstanding high school athletic career with third-place finishes in the boys shot put and discus.
Oliver threw a personal record 59-2.25 in the shot put, just one inch less than the best throw of runner-up Darreyus Scott of Denham Springs. Central Lafourche’s Kaden Adams won with a 60-4.5.
Oliver threw 162-6 in the discus. Captain Shreve’s Lionel Prudhomme won with a 176-00.
Airline sophomore Shelby Ledet finished in a three-way tie for third in the girls high jump. She cleared 5-3.75 inches. John Curtis’ Addilyn Dufrene won with a 5-7.75.
Haughton’s Brown also finished fourth in the 200 in 21.55. Holy Cross’ Josh Brown won in 20.43.
Airline junior Jayden Williams was fourth in the boys 800 in 1:55.56. Jesuit’s Brandt Blanchard won in 1:52.58. Williams finished just .63 behind third-place finisher Brayden Berglund of Mandeville.
Airline senior Wallace took fourth in the girls 100 in 11.92. Her time was just .06 slower than third-place finisher Destiny Harrison of Liberty Magnet. Destrehan’s Marley Richard won in 11.53.
Benton senior Kyla Daux was fifth in the girls 100 hurdles in 14.97. East Ascension’s Katie Trinity won in 14.28.
Wallace also finished sixth in the 200 in 24.76. Richard won in 23.85.
Parkway senior Lauren Taylor was sixth in the girls 1,600 in 5:37.02. Northshore’s Grace Keene won in 4:59.93.
Benton sophomore Malachi Zeigler finished sixth in the boys javelin with a 166-6. Catholic’s Robert Conley won with a 209-5.
Parkway junior Ben Ruliffson was seventh in the boys 1,600 in 4:29.95.
The Parkway foursome of Jesus Cordova, Alex Gomez, Andrew Kent and Aiden O’Nishea finished seventh in the 4X800 relay in 8:20.10. Central Lafourche won in 7:58.92.
Benton’s Daux also finished eighth in the 300 hurdles in 46.25. Barbe’s Reese Trahan won in 42.46.
Barbe won the Class 5A girls title with 72 points. St. Joseph’s of Baton Rouge was second with 41. Airline finished 13th with 17.
Catholic won the Class 5A boys title by one point over Jesuit. Parkway finished eighth with 26. Haughton tied for 10th with 22.
