High school track and field: Plain Dealing’s Newton wins shot put and discus in Class 1A state meet

Plain Dealing senior Brianna Newton closed her outstanding high school career in style Thursday at the LHSAA Track and Field Meet at LSU.

Newton swept the Class 1A girls shot put and discus events.

She won the shot put for the second straight year with a throw of 38 feet, 4.25 inches. That came on her fifth throw. Her second-best of 37-1.75 was her fourth. Merryville’s Miranda Williams was second with a 37-3.5.

Newton finished second in the shot put in her freshman and sophomore years.

Newton went into her sixth and final throw in the discus needing to surpass Merryville’s Taylee Cooper’s throw of 104-3 to get the lead. 

Newton got off a throw of 105-9 to win. That was 14 feet, 3 inches farther than her previous best. Newton finished second in the event her freshman season.

Plain Dealing junior Jakayla Douglas, making her first appearance in the state meet, finished sixth in the high jump. She cleared 4-9.75. Riverside Academy’s Bayli Melancon won with a 5-1.75.
