High school track and field: Plain Dealing’s Newton wins shot put in Class 1A state meet at LSU

Plain Dealing junior Brianna Newton won the Class 1A shot put on the first day of the LHSAA Outdoor Track and Field State Meet Thursday at LSU.

Newton’s winning throw went 39 feet, 8 inches. JS Clark Leadership Academy’s Neveah Reddit finished second with a 37-3.25.

Newton’s winning distance came on her second attempt. Her third attempt also went more than 39 feet. Two of her other three legal attempts went more than 38 feet.

Newton also made the awards stand in the discus with a third-place finish. Her best throw went 106-9. Central Catholic’s Addison Griffazzi won with a 125-6. Ascension Episcopal’s Molly Cormier was second with a 109-8.
