High school volleyball: Airline downs Byrd, eyes District 1-I title

The Airline Lady Vikings defeated the Byrd Lady Jackets 25-13, 25-15, 25-19 in a District 1-I volleyball match Tuesday at Airline.

Airline (25-10, 10-1) can wrap up at least share of the district championship with a victory over West Monroe Wednesday night at BPCC. The Lady Vikings defeated the Lady Rebels in straight sets in the teams’ first district game Oct. 10.

Airline and Ruston (33-8, 10-1) are tied for first. Ruston concludes the regular season against West Monroe Thursday. If the Lady Vikings and Lady Bearcats both win, they will share the district title. Airline and Ruston split their district matches. Both went to a fifth set.

Airline hosts Haughton on Thursday before closing the regular season in the Dunham tournament. The Lady Vikings were No. 13 in the latest Division I power rankings and will likely host a first-round playoff game. The playoffs begin Nov. 1.

Courtney Clawson had four aces, five kills and one assist against Byrd. Gabby Patronis had 10 digs along with four aces and four kills.

Tori Ligman had 18 digs. Paisley Zika had five kills and three blocks.

Elsewhere, Parkway fell to West Monroe 25-17, 26-24, 25-14 Tuesday at home. The Lady Panthers close their second season of volleyball at Benton, a first-year program, Thursday.

Benton won its fourth match of the season Monday, defeating Huntington 25-10, 25-21, 25-21 in District 1-II play at Benton.
