High school volleyball: Airline, Haughton win District 1 openers

The Airline Lady Vikings and Haughton Lady Bucs won District 1, Division I volleyball openers Tuesday night.

Airline won a five-set thriller over the Byrd Lady Jackets, last year’s district runner-up, at Byrd. Haughton defeated BTW in straight sets at BTW.

At Byrd, the Lady Jackets won the first set 25-23, but the Lady Vikings cruised to the second-set victory, 25-11. Byrd dominated the third set, 25-12. The fourth was close with Airline pulling out a 25-22 victory. The Lady Vikings then captured the fifth 15-13.

Airline’s Lauren Pilcher had five aces, seven kills, seven blocks and seven digs. Kaylea Noble had two aces, six kills, two blocks and nine digs. Haylea Patterson had five aces, four kills and nine digs.

Airline improved to 4-4 overall. Byrd swept the Lady Vikings last year. The Lady Jackets’ only district losses were to champion Ruston.

At BTW, Haughton dominated the Lady Lions, winning 25-14, 25-11 and 25-8. The Lady Bucs improved to 4-0 overall.

In non-district action Monday, Haughton defeated Loyola College Prep in four sets, 25-23, 22-25, 25-10.

According to MaxPreps, Savannah O’Neal was named the Player of the Match.

Airline continues District 1 play Thursday at BTW. Haughton hosts Caddo Magnet.
