Nine wrestlers from Bossier Parish schools reached the semifinals on the first day of competition in the Allstate Sugar Bowl/LHSAA Wrestling State Tournament on Friday at the CenturyLink Center.
Parkway, which has three semifinalists, is in sixth place in Division I with 106 points. Baton Rouge Catholic leads with 157 followed by defending state champion New Orleans Brother Martin with 155. Covington St.Paul’s is fourth with 142 and St. Amant fifth with 117.5.
Haughton, which has two semifinalists, is eighth in Division II with 61 points.
Benton, which has two semifinalists, is 12th with 24. Lafayette Teurlings Catholic leads with 135.5 followed by Rayne with 114.5 and North DeSoto with 113.
Bossier, which has one semifinalist, is 12th in Division III with 28 points. Defending state champion Basile leads with 113.
Parkway’s semifinalists are Joshua Keeler (126-pound class), Jacob Chittom (152) and Kaleb Garcia (182).
Keeler received a first-round bye and then pinned his two opponents in 22 seconds and 1:23, respectively.
Chittom won his first-round match by technical fall and then pinned his second-round opponent in 15 seconds. He defeated Mohammed Abdelhaq of Chalmette 4-2 in the quarterfinals.
Garcia received a first-round bye and then won his second-round match by technical fall. He won a 5-1 decision over Darrien Batiste in the quarterfinals.
Airline’s Ernie Perry III reached the semifinals in the Division I 106-pound class. Perry pinned his first two opponents in a combined 2:58 then defeated David Bourgeois of East Ascension by technical fall in the quarterfinals.
Haughton’s semifinalists are Louis Lindsey (120) and Justin Nixon (195).
Lindsey pinned his two opponents in 3:07 and 1:32. Nixon pinned his first opponent in 2:27 and then defeated Ron Roberts of Rayne 5-3 in the quarterfinals.
Benton’s semifinalists are Trey Winkler (195) and Preston Fisher (220).
Winkler pinned his two opponents in 1:20 and 4:47. Fisher received a first-round bye and then pinned Christopher West of Caddo Magnet in 1:21 in the quarterfinals.
Bossier’s Ja’cory Tyler reached the semifinals of the Division III 126-pound class.
Tyler received a first-round bye and then pinned Lance Laurentz of South Beauregard in 24 seconds in the quarterfinals.
The tournament concludes today. Session II, which features semifinal and consolation matches, starts at 10 a.m. Session III, which features championship matches, starts at 5 p.m.
In addition to its semifinalists, Parkway has three wrestlers still alive in the consolation brackets — David Viers (106), Hayden Wood (145) and Terrence Murray (170).
Viers lost a tough 3-1 sudden victory-1 decision against Brandon Gainy of Holy Cross in the quarterfinals.
Haughton has three wrestlers still alive in the consolation brackets — Dennis Matute (145), Christian Johnson (160) and Charlie Yocom (182).
Bossier’s Christian Johnson is still alive in the 160-pound consolation bracket.
