High school wrestling: Parkway’s Keeler and Garcia, Airline’s Perry advance to championship matches in state tournament

Parkway’s Joshua Keeler and Kaleb Garcia and Airline’s Ernie Perry III have advanced to the finals in their respective Division I weight classes in the Allstate Sugar Bowl/LHSAA Wrestling State Tournament Saturday at the CenturyLink Center.

Keeler, the No. 1 seed, pinned Sulphur’s Trent Smith in 1 minute, 17 seconds in the 126-pound semifinals. He will face No. 2 seed Ethan Castex of Brother Martin in the finals.

Garcia, the No. 3 seed, won a 13-1 major decision over No. 6 Joshua Vitto of Barbe in the 182-pound semifinals. He will face No. 1 seed Jarin Meyer of Baton Rouge High in the finals.

Perry, the No. 1 seed, defeated Brandon Gainy 8-3 in the 106-pound semifinals. He will face No. 2 Jacob Houser of St. Paul’s for the title.

The final session of the state tournament, which features all championship matches, starts at 5 p.m.

Six other wrestlers from parish wrestlers lost in the semifinals.

Parkway’s Jacob Chittom, the No. 5 seed, lost to No. 1 Peyton Ward of  St. Paul’s in 2:17 in the 152-pound class.

Haughton’s Louis Lindsey, the No. 2 seed, fell to No. 6 Carter Burgess of Archbishop Rummel by fall in 5:34 in the Division II 120-pound class.

Haughton’s Justin Nixon, the No. 3 seed, lost a heartbreaker to No. 2 Donovan Kaufman of Archbishop Rummel 13-11 (sudden victory-1) in the Division II 195-pound class.

Benton’s Trey Winkler, the No. 4 seed, fell to No. 1 Dylan Olivier of North DeSoto by fall in 4:36 in the Division II 195-pound class.

Benton’s Preston Fisher, the No. 4 seed, fell to No. 1 Miles Doucet of Rayne by fall in 5:52 in the Division II 220-pound class.

Bossier’s Ja’cory Tyler, the No. 3 seed, lost a 6-1 decision to No. 2 David Diecidue of Archbishop Hannan in the Division III 126-pound class.

As of early Saturday afternoon with consolation matches ongoing, Parkway was fifth in Division I with 146 points. St. Paul’s led with 228.5.

Haughton was ninth in Division II and Benton was 13th. Bossier was 12th in Division III.
