Hockey: Shreveport Mudbugs play final home regular-season games Friday and Saturday


The Shreveport Mudbugs play their final home series of the regular season Friday and Saturday against the Corpus Christi Ice Rays at George’s Pond at Hirsch Coliseum.

Games both nights start at 7:11.

The Mudbugs (34-16-2-3) are second in the North American Hockey League’s South Division with 73 points. The Lone Star Brahmas (43-14-2-0) are in first with 88 points and have clinched the regular-season title.

Corpus Christi (29-17-4-5) is third with 67 points and Wichita Falls (29-20-4-2) fourth with 64.

Shreveport has clinched a playoff berth along with Corpus Christi and Wichita Falls.

After the Corpus Christi series, the Mudbugs close the regular season with three road games against the Topeka RoadRunners April 7-9.

The South Division semifinal playoffs can begin no earlier than April 13. Lone Star will play the No. 4 team in the division in a best-of-5 series. The No. 2 and 3 teams, which could be Shreveport and Corpus Christi, will also play a best-of-five series.

The winners will play a best-of-five series in the division finals. The four divisional playoff champions will advance to the Robertson Cup Championship May 11-14 in Duluth, Minn.

The Mudbugs are riding a four-game winning streak. They swept Wichita Falls 4-0 and 5-4 on March 24-25.

According to statistics on the NAHL website, Frankie Melton is Shreveport’s top scorer with 55 points (33 goals, 22 assists). He ranks eighth in the league. Croix Evingson is second on the team with 49 (12 goals, 37 assists) and Kieran Durgan third with 44 (18-26).

Mudbugs goalies John Roberts and Dylan Lubbesmeyer rank sixth and seventh in the league, respectively, in goals-against average. Roberts has a 2.15 gaa and Lubbesmeyer a 2.23.
