BATON ROUGE, LA – June is Internet Safety Month, and Attorney General Jeff Landry is challenging Louisiana families to educate themselves about online safety and security this Summer.

“With school out for Summer, many kids will spend more time on computers and mobile devices; and it is important they do so in the safest manner possible,” said Attorney General Jeff Landry. “Parents and guardians are urged to ensure that Internet-based activities remain secure for their children and that young people maintain control over who has access to their personal information.”

“Without the proper supervision, children can easily be exposed to inappropriate material and messages, exploited by sexual predators, and even fall victim to con artists,” added Attorney General Jeff Landry. “I encourage parents and guardians to learn online safety tips and share them with their children.”

Important Summertime online safety tips for children include:

  • Do not post updates about your family vacation while you are still out of town.
  • Do not give out photos of yourself or any personal information such as address and telephone number, parents’ work address and telephone number, or the name and location of your school without parents’ permission
  • Never assume others are really who they say they are.
  • Never agree to meet with an online acquaintance.
  • Do not pick screen names that give away personal information.
  • Do not respond to any message that makes you feel uncomfortable, and report those messages to a parent or guardian.
