A local chef put his culinary skills to the ultimate test and will be making his national television debut this week.
Chef Darrell Johnson, owner of Crescent City Bistro in Shreveport, will appear on season 13 of Food Network’s “Cutthroat Kitchen.” His episode will air Wednesday, Aug. 17, at 8 p.m.
Johnson is one of four chefs featured on the episode, each vying for a cash prize and bragging rights as top chef.
Contestants are given $25,000 at the start of the episode and can use it to their advantage during the three rounds of competition, purchasing sabotages to use against the other chefs. At the end of three rounds, the winning chef walks away with their remaining money.
Although the dishes are predetermined by the show, Johnson made sure to include a little bit of Louisiana in each one.
“I took my style of cooking and made each dish my own,” he said. “I’m always true to my roots and true to who I am in my cooking.”
One thing that surprised him during filming was the skill level of his competition.
“The competition was at its highest,” Johnson said. “When you add the challenges, making the simplest of dishes is hard to do.”
Navigating through an unfamiliar kitchen while surrounded by camera crews was a challenge, too. Johnson said he represented the area well, though, showcasing his talent, personality and love of bold Louisiana flavors.
“Part of me being on the show was for the nation to see that Louisiana, specifically Shreveport-Bossier, are on top of the culinary food chain,” Johnson said. “This is just the beginning for me.”
Johnson hopes this experience will inspire other young chefs and youth in the area to venture deeper into the culinary industry. Johnson will be hosting a watch party at his Shreveport restaurant Wednesday night. Guests are encouraged to RSVP due to limited seating.
