Officials with Louisiana Downs announced the return of live horse racing during a news conference held Thursday, April 30, outlining plans for the 2026 Thoroughbred racing season and a slate of events aimed at drawing fans back to the track.
The season is set to begin Saturday, May 2, coinciding with Kentucky Derby Day, often referred to as the “Run for the Roses.” Opening Day will feature a first post time of 2:35 p.m., followed by a full afternoon of racing and a viewing party for the iconic race.
Track officials said the meet will run through September 30, with a regular daily post time of 4:05 p.m. Exceptions will include Opening Day, Memorial Day, Louisiana Cup Day and Super Derby Day.
Director of Racing Roxanne Tanner praised the continued commitment of participants in the racing community.
“Our horsemen and horsewomen are dedicated to our racetrack, and we are thrilled they make their way here year after year,” Tanner said. “The team at Louisiana Downs is always excited to kick off the timeless tradition of the Thoroughbred meet and looking forward to seeing race fans return.”
“The start of a new meet is always exciting, especially after a promising 2025 season,” Preston said. “We are thrilled to welcome back leading trainer Jonathon Wong along with top trainers Steve Asmussen and Shane Wilson, as well as our premier jockey colony featuring Rey Williams, 2025 leading rider Joel Domingez and Hall of Fame and Kentucky Derby-winning jockey Calvin Borel.”
Beyond the races, Louisiana Downs is planning a variety of special events throughout the season. The “Wallets of Wagers” scavenger hunt kicked off festivities beginning April 27, giving fans an early opportunity to engage with the track ahead of Opening Day.
Other highlights include an Independence Day weekend fireworks show following races on Friday, July 3, and the popular Wiener Dog Charity Races scheduled for Labor Day Monday, Sept. 7.
Officials emphasized that the racetrack continues to position itself as both a competitive racing venue and a regional entertainment destination, offering experiences for longtime fans and newcomers alike.
With a mix of high-level competition, returning talent and community-focused events, Louisiana Downs leaders say they are optimistic about the months ahead.
As preparations continue, the track is expected to once again serve as a hub for racing enthusiasts across northwest Louisiana, welcoming horsemen, fans and families for a season of tradition, excitement and community connection.
