(09/09/24) BATON ROUGE, La. — With Tropical Storm Francine projected to make landfall as a hurricane in Louisiana later this week, LaHouse Research and Education Center director Carol Friedland is urging homeowners to take proactive measures to safeguard their families and homes from the impending severe weather.
“While there may not be enough time to embark on significant home repair projects, there are several small actions homeowners can take to reduce the risk of damage and injury,” Friedland said. “Simple steps such as securing outdoor furniture and ensuring windows are protected can go a long way toward keeping your home and family safe.”
Friedland provided these tips to consider in the immediate lead-up to the storm:
— Secure outdoor items. Loose items like patio furniture, grills and toys can become dangerous projectiles in high winds. Bring these items inside or anchor them securely to prevent them from becoming hazards.
— Protect windows and doors. If your home has hurricane shutters, now is the time to close and lock them. For homes without shutters, boarding up windows with plywood can help prevent glass breakage and reduce the risk of interior damage from flying debris.
— Check emergency supplies. Ensure your household has an adequate supply of nonperishable food, bottled water, medications, flashlights, batteries and a first-aid kit. A battery-operated or hand-crank radio is also essential for staying informed about weather updates if power goes out.
— Prepare for power outages. Charge mobile phones and other necessary electronic devices. If you have a generator, test it to make sure it’s functioning properly and store fuel in a safe place. Make sure your flashlights are operating properly and that you have sufficient batteries.
— Review your evacuation plan. Take time to review your family’s evacuation plan, including identifying a safe destination and ensuring your vehicle is fueled. Listen to local authorities and follow evacuation orders if they are issued. Remember to prepare a “go bag” with essential items like identification, cash and prescription medications.
Friedland also highlighted the importance of staying informed throughout the event.
“Monitor local news and updates from the National Hurricane Center to stay aware of any changes in the storm’s path or strength,” she said.
