This week, LSU Health Shreveport’s Office of Graduate Medical Education Office welcomed 175 new residents and fellows to campus. Residents, newly graduated medical doctors, and fellows, doctors who have completed a residency program, train at LSU Health Shreveport’s clinical partners’ sites in their chosen specialties. The trainees are led by a supervising attending physician who provides insight and teaching points while caring for patients which advance the resident or fellow’s knowledge. Residencies range from three to seven years with fellowships ranging from one to three years bringing new physicians to reside in North Louisiana from three to nine years depending on the specialty and whether they choose to pursue a fellowship.
The majority of the 175 residents and fellows have relocated to the Shreveport-Bossier area creating a beneficial economic impact on North Louisiana as many of these individuals will purchase homes, cars, groceries, visit restaurants in addition to most having spouses who will work in the region.

We are confident these individuals will gain the experience and knowledge required to become competent and compassionate physician leaders,” stated Dr. James Morris, Assistant Dean for Graduate Medical Education and VA Affairs and Designated Institutional Officer at LSU Health Shreveport.
