Medical students at LSU Health Shreveport now have an opportunity to leave with more than just a medical degree thanks to a new partnership with LSU Shreveport.
Students can pursue one of three LSUS master’s degrees while in medical school:
Master of Business Administration (MBA)
Master of Health Administration (MHA)
Master of Public Health (MPH)
The dual degree partnership will be celebrated Tuesday, August 18, during a Memorandum of Understanding signing at the LSUS campus.
Medical students who are completing their second pre-clinical year at LSU Health can enroll in either LSUS’s MBA, MHA or MPH programs, completing those degrees in approximately one year before starting the clinical phase of medical school.
Future doctors are furthering their understanding of an increasingly complex healthcare system, preparing themselves to operate their own practices, break into administrative hospital positions, and understanding how to protect and improve the health of entire groups.
Medical students are increasingly desiring dual degrees with an estimated nine percent pursuing a second degree, according to a 2025 study by the American Association of Medical Colleges.
“LSUS is very pleased to partner with LSUHS to complement the education and training that our future physicians will need to serve patients in our region,” said Dr. Helen Taylor (Ph.D.), LSUS Provost. “Business acumen and management training is crucial to the success of any physician practice, and this partnership ensures that professionals can have expertise in both areas when they establish themselves in our community.”
Dr. Kelly Pagidas (MD, MA, FACOG, FRCSC), senior associate dean for medical education at LSU Health Shreveport, said this addition to medical education will impact entire communities.
“This type of education broadens a physician’s impact beyond individual patient care to health systems, organizations, populations and policies that shape health outcomes,” Pagidas said. “It equips physicians with a critical lens for decision-making and the skills necessary to build healthier communities.”
