Middle school girls basketball: Cope, Elm Grove top districts after first half of play

The Cope Lady Cougars and Elm Grove Lady Eagles top the eighth- and seventh- grade standings, respectively, through the first half of Bossier Parish middle school girls basketball district play.

Cope improved to 5-0 in the eighth-grade district with a 32-16 victory over Haughton on Monday at Haughton. The Benton Lady Tigers, who defeated Rusheon 35-28 at Rusheon, are one game back at 4-1.

In the other eighth-grade game, Greenacres nipped Elm Grove 20-19 at Elm Grove.

Elm Grove finished the first half of seventh-grade district play at 5-0 with a victory over Greenacres. Cope, which defeated Haughton 34-18, is in second at 4-1.

In the other seventh-grade game, third-place Benton (3-2 district) downed Rusheon 26-18.

At Haughton, Kayla Hampton tossed in 18 points to lead the Cope eighth-grade team to the victory.

Kaleigh Brown and Averi Phillips combined for eight to lead Haughton.

Reagan Amos led the victorious Cope seventh-grade team with 12 points.

Meaux Carroll and Catherine Jurkovich scored seven each.

At Elm Grove, Cha’Kendall Wyatt poured in 19 points to lead the Greenacres eighth-grade team to the close victory.

Darnesha Bonner led Elm Grove with seven points, and Caellen Burr added six.

Mikayla Williams tossed in 16 points for the victorious Elm Grove seventh-grade team. Amoree Williams added eight.

Markayla Blade, Catherine Dupree and Jakayla Brown combined for six points for Greenacres. Dupree was also cited for her defensive play.

At Rusheon, Riley Grace Stanford and Tahlor Walker scored 16 and 14 points, respectively, to lead the victorious Benton eighth-grade squad.

Walker, Molly Machen and Ella Kate Malley were the team’s top rebounders.

Kennedy Stevens, McKenzie Young and Laci Hedgepeth led the defensive effort. Stanford, Walker and Malley were cited for their all-around play.

Danielle Colemon led a balanced Benton scoring attack with seven points in the Lady Tigers’ seventh-grade victory.

Ryuka Roddy added six points. Addison Graves, Paris Salley and Tate Sellers combined for 12.

Colemon, Sellers and Rylie Tippett led the rebounding effort. Marissa Schoth and Jermerica Carper were standouts on the defensive side of the ball.

Graves and Colemon were cited for their all-around play.
