Middle school track and field: Benton athletes fare well in Meet of Champions


Benton Middle athletes fared well in the Meet of Champions track and field meet last week at Lee Hedges Stadium.

The meet was created by Youree Drive Middle School assistant principal Jerry Byrd, son of former Bossier Press-Tribune sports editor Jerry Byrd.

In a Facebook post, Byrd said his goal is for the Meet of Champions to become the premiere middle school meet in Northwest Louisiana. Byrd’s late father was a champion of track and field during his long career as a journalist.

Benton, Caddo Middle Magnet, Youree and Linwood Charter competed.

Benton won the boys division and finished runner-up in the girls

Benton’s winners in the boys division were Owen Wainscott (javelin, 131 feet, 9 inches), Clint Lasiter (discus, 132-1), Evan Chamberlin (1,600, 5:22.53), Nick Randle (high jump, 5-0), Tyler Williams (200, 24.59).

Benton athletes finished 1-2-3 in the discus with Ashur Hall taking second (115-0) and Conrad Johnson third (102-1).

Benton’s Jada Anderson won the girls long jump with a 15-4. Tahlor Walker took the high jump with a leap of 4-4. She also finished second in the long jump.
