Middle school track and field: Benton boys, Cope girls take titles in Haughton meet

Benton swept the boys divisions and Cope won the girls in the third middle school meet of the season Tuesday at Haughton.  

The team results duplicated those of the first two meets. The season concludes next Tuesday with the district meet at Airline.

Benton scored 130 points in the 8th-grade boys division. Elm Grove finished second with 83 and Haughton third with 71.

The 6th-7th-grade division was tight. Benton tallied 93.5 points, edging runner-up Haughton by seven. Elm Grove was third with 66, Greenacres fourth with 62 and Cope fifth with 60.

Cope scored 141 points in the girls division. Benton was runner-up with 125. Elm Grove finished third with 99.

Greenacres’ Jeremiah Epps had a very good day in the 8th-grade boys division.

He won the 100-meter hurdles in a swift 14.64 seconds and finished second in the 200 dash in 24.03. The 200 was one of the best races of the day with Haughton’s Michael Loller edging Epps by just .03.

Epps also ran on the Cougars’ winning 4X100 relay team with Jameriea Gardner, Braylon Bryant and Amari Fielding. They ran a 48.97.

Benton’s Brody Hutchison won the 1,600 in 5:00.16 and was second in the 800 in 2:21.65. Haughton’s Camron Rickard took the 800 in 2:20.09.

Elm Grove’s Benjamin Ruliffson finished second in the 1,600 in 5:21.85.

Haughton’s Giovanni Musgrove took the 100 in 11.58. Benton’s Jason Gonzalez was second in 12.01.

Cope’s Lathon Woodland and Leo Heng finished 1-2 in the 400. Woodland ran a 58.43 and Heng a 1:01.12.

Benton’s Cason Herndon finished second in the 100 hurdles in 15.46 and high jump with a leap of 5 feet, 2 inches. Elm Grove’s Avery Price won the high jump with a 5-4.

Benton won the 4X200 and 4X400 relays. 

The foursome of Kannon Greer, Case Austin, Luis Gomez and Davion Eason captured the 4X800 in 1:40.82. Cope’s Fielding, Bryant Gardner and Epps finished second in 1:41.72.

The team of Chris Brown, Jackson Sullivant, Beckett Moore and Austin won the 4X400 relay in 3:57.53. Cope’s Ian Sims, Woodland, Jadon Mobley and Heng took second in 4:06.19.

Benton also finished second in the 4X100. Jason Gonzalez, Greg Chambers, Gomez and Viggio Green ran a 50.19.

Benton’s Shamarion Player had one of the day’s most impressive performances, winning the long jump with a leap of 18 feet. Haughton’s Payton Harris was second with a 16-2.

Elm Grove’s Patrick Gray claimed the shot put with a toss of 41-0. Cole’s Yadreakous Davis was second with a 37-2.

Benton’s Tucker Beatty won the discus with a throw of 115-7, 2-10 farther than Haughton’s Clayton Zahm.

Third-place finishers in individual events were Benton’s Andrew Bass (100), Benton’s Player (200, high jump), Elm Grove’s Charles Ernest (400), Elm Grove’s Ruliffson (800), Benton’s Chase Miguel (1,600), Cope’s Sims (100 hurdles), Elm Grove’s Price (long jump), Greenacres’ Josh Woods (shot put), Elm Grove’s Gray (discus) and Elm Grove’s Jackson (high jump).

Elm Grove’s Makenzie Marshall was a triple winner in the girls division,

She won the 100 in 12.64, the 200 in 28.15 and the long jump with a 16-1.

Marshall also ran on the Lady Eagles’ winning 4X100 relay team with Kenadie Williams, Kenadie Loche and Zara Baker. They ran a 53.10.

Benton’s Claire Allen was a double winner, taking the 800 in 2:41.86 and the 1,600 in 5:53.36. Allen’s teammate Eryn Flowers finished a close second in the both the 800 and 1,600. She ran the former in 2:44.14 and the latter in 5:56.20.

Cope’s Ke’Zyriah Sykes captured the 100 hurdles in 18.14 and finished second in the 100 in 12.76.  

She also ran on the Lady Cougars’ winning 4X200 team with Zerri Jones, Cartavya’ Butler and Karliyah Woodard. They ran a 1:54.66.

The 400 race was one of the day’s best. Haughton’s Skylar Branch won in 1:07.17, just .01 ahead of Cope’s Sarah Catherine Tauzin. 

The Benton foursome of Ryleigh McCoy, Isabelle Joyner, Danielle Smart and Taylor Martinez won the 4X400 relay in 4:38.46. Cope’s Tauzin, Abbigail Bryant, Antaija Davis and Taylor Pellonari finished second in 4:42.21.

Benton’s Tameara Player took the shot put with a 28-11, edging Elm Grove’s Zaniyah Carter by 8 inches.

Carter won the discus with a throw of 76-5. Benton’s Landri James was second with a 68-9.

Cope’s Shelby Ledet captured the high jump with a leap of 4-11, just 1 inch higher than Benton’s Audrey Liles.

Other runners-up in individual events were Cope’s Emma Hahn (200, 28.80),  Elm Grove’s Emanhee Allen (100 hurdles, 18.26) and Benton’s Martinez (long jump, 13-9).

The Benton foursome of Dominique Coore, Kryshna Bostic, Martinez and Tati Saulter finished second in the 4X200 relay in 1:57.51.

Cope’s Sykes, Jones, Butler and Woodard took second in the 4X100 in 54.92.

Cope athletes posted third-place finishes in all but two of the individual events.

They were Jones (100, 200), Pellonari (400), Bryant (800, 1,600), Woodard (100 hurdles), Tauzin (long jump) and Doretha Cutley (discus).

Benton’s James was third in the shot put, and Elm Grove’s Loche finished third in the high jump.

Greenacres’ Brandon Craig was a double winner in the 6th-7th-grade boys division.

He took the 100 in 12.80, .29 ahead of his teammate Traevian Jones. Craig went 16-6 in the long jump, 4 inches farther than Benton’s Malachi Zeiglar.

Zeiglar also finished second in the 100 hurdles in 16.97 and the high jump with a 5-0. Haughton’s Jaiden Waller won the hurdles in 16.86, and his teammate Kyron Turner won the high jump with a 5-2.

Craig also ran on the Mustangs’ winning 4X200 relay team with Terrance Hayes, Jenalious Johnson and Jones. They ran a 1:43.79.

The same foursome finished second in the 4X100 in 52.45. The Benton foursome of Jayson Holloway, Jayden Millen, Zeiglar and Davion Young won in 52.45.

Elm Grove’s Brennan Robin and Aiden O’Nishea finished 1-2 in the 1,600. Robin ran 5:22.92 and O’Nishea a 5:32.24.

Robin also finished second in the 800 in 2:29.04. Benton’s AJ Robinson won in 2:21.56.

Robinson also ran on the Tigers’ winning 4X400 team with Wesley Hollowell, Jacob Coleman and Drake Emerson. They ran a 4:13.38.

Cope’s Pierre Watson won the 200 in 25.98, .34 faster than Haughton’s Kavonte Autry.

Cope’s Abrams Coats captured the 400 in 59.72. Rusheon’s Jacory Gosey was second in 1:01.86.

Elm Grove’s JD Hardy took the shot put with a toss of 33-0. Benton’s JT Young finished second with a 29-2, 1 inch farther than teammate Lucas Cox.

Benton’s Nathan Sprankle won the discus with an 83-5, 2-1 farther than Haughton’s Jaden Keith.

The Rusheon foursome of Quinten Hodge, Jonie Gonzalez, Gosey and Emmanuel Edwards finished second in the 4X400 in 4:16.13.

Other third-place finishers in individual events were Haughton’s Turner (100), Haughton’s Xavier McDuffy (200), Rusheon’s Hodge (400, long jump), Cope’s Austin Bonney (800, 1,600), Haughton’s Ethan Johnson (100 hurdles), Elm Grove’s Hardy (discus) and Cope’s Preston  Hughes (high jump).
