At Chimp Haven, Mother’s Day came into full bloom as the sanctuary’s beloved residents enjoyed a floral-themed enrichment featuring delicate, pastel-hued roses. The celebration offered a fragrant twist to the day, as chimps took time to sniff and savor their new favorite flora.
Each rose was not only a tasty seasonal snack but also a sensory experience, encouraging exploration and engagement for the sanctuary’s over 300 chimpanzees.
“Mother’s Day is another opportunity for us to provide a joyful, enriching moment that resonates with the chimps,” said Rana Smith, President and CEO of Chimp Haven. “The roses are a beautiful way to honor the day while supporting natural behaviors like foraging and curiosity.”
Grace, always the picture of poise, was first on the scene. Known for her readiness when treats are involved—and her graceful demeanor—she quickly selected her bloom and enjoyed a quiet moment, a rose in hand like the elegant lady she is.
Pumpkin fully embraced the floral celebration. With a gentle sniff and a soft nibble of the petals, she posed proudly atop her structure, gaze tilted upward, giving the team a perfect photo-worthy moment.
Murphy, the distinguished gentleman of the group, wasted no time gathering an armful of blooms. A longtime resident with a refined palate, he chomped his way through the bouquet with speed and satisfaction.
These simple, thoughtful touches reflect Chimp Haven’s ongoing commitment to creative enrichment that celebrates each resident’s personality. Chimp Haven offers a variety of enrichment activities throughout the year, in addition to a healthy diet of fresh produce, including leafy greens, vegetables, starches, and fruit.
Chimp Haven is a private, nonprofit refuge on 200 acres of forested land in Northwest Louisiana, and home to more than 300 chimps retired from biomedical research.
