Catholics across North Louisiana are mourning the loss of Reverend Monsignor Earl V. Provenza, a beloved priest and longtime spiritual leader whose ministry impacted generations throughout the region.
The Roman Catholic Diocese of Shreveport announced Thursday, May 7, that Provenza passed away earlier that morning. The news was shared in a statement posted to the diocese’s social media pages, where church leaders reflected on his decades of faithful service and the lasting legacy he leaves behind.
“It is with heavy hearts that we share the news of the passing of Reverend Monsignor Earl V. Provenza,” the statement read. “Msgr. Provenza was a retired but still very active priest of our diocese, and it’s difficult to put into words just how much he meant to all of us. He was a pillar of the community and spent his entire life being a faithful example of what it means to serve others.”
For more than 60 years, Provenza served congregations throughout the Diocese of Shreveport, becoming widely respected for his dedication to ministry, leadership and compassion. His influence extended far beyond the pulpit, helping shape both the spiritual and physical foundation of the Catholic community in North Louisiana.
Among his many contributions was his involvement in the renovation of Cathedral of St. John Berchmans, one of the region’s most recognizable Catholic landmarks. He also played a key role in founding Mary Queen of Peace Parish, helping expand ministry opportunities for growing communities in the Shreveport-Bossier area.
Church officials also highlighted Provenza’s commitment to supporting future priests through seminarian bursaries established in his honor. His mentorship and encouragement helped guide many young men entering ministry, leaving an impact that will continue for generations.
Though officially retired, Provenza remained active in diocesan life and continued serving parishioners whenever needed. Many in the community remembered him not only as a priest, but as a trusted counselor, mentor and friend.
“We’re going to miss him dearly, but we take comfort in the incredible legacy he leaves behind,” the diocese stated. “Please join us in praying for the repose of his soul and for his family and friends during this time.”
The statement concluded with a traditional Catholic prayer:
“Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord;
and let perpetual light shine upon him.
May he rest in peace.
May Msgr. Provenza’s soul and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.”
Funeral services for Msgr. Provenza will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 9, 2026, at the Cathedral of St. John Berchmans in Shreveport. Visitation will take place from 8 to 9:30 a.m., followed by a recitation of the rosary at 9:30 a.m. The funeral Mass will begin at 10 a.m., with burial following at St. Joseph Cemetery in Shreveport.
As word of his passing spread throughout the region, parishioners and community members reflected on a life devoted to faith, service and the care of others — a legacy many say will continue to shape the Diocese of Shreveport for years to come.
