BOSSIER CITY, LA – Services celebrating the life of Lela Mae Shanklin, 92, will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, March 21, 2016 at Hill Crest Memorial Chapel in Haughton, LA with Bro. Billy Pierce officiating. Interment will follow at Forest Park West Cemetery in Shreveport, LA. The family will be receiving friends for visitation on Sunday, March 20, 2016 from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. at Hill Crest Memorial Funeral Home.

Lela was born in Ralls, TX to Troy and Irene Morris and passed away in Lufkin, TX on March 16, 2016. She graduated from Ropesville High School in 1941. After, graduation, she and her twin sister joined the war effort and assembled aircraft in Ft. Worth, TX. When the war ended she became a cosmetologist in Ropesville, TX. Lela moved to Shreveport in the early 1960’s and became an instructor at Mr. Guys Beauty School in Bossier. After Guys closed she made a career change and worked at the Louisiana Army Ammunition plant until being laid off. Despite the setback, she went to work at the AT&T assembly plant in Shreveport until her retirement. After retirement she returned to Lubbock to spend time with her twin sister Lola. They made several trips to California to visit family, which they thoroughly enjoyed. They also made several trips to Twinsburg, Ohio for the annual Twins Day Festival. They enjoyed meeting other twins from across the country. Even though they enjoyed traveling they also spent time caring for their aging mother, and later a younger brother. After her twin sister died in 2013 Lela moved to Lufkin, TX to be closer to her kids.

She was preceded in death by her son, Stanley Shanklin; daughter, Darlene Robertson; twin sister, Lola Whitfield; sister, Celeste Henley and brother, Donald Morris.

Ms. Shanklin is survived by daughter, Winona Kilgore (Jerry); sons, Wesley Shanklin (Denise), Roy Shanklin (Jeanne), Troy Shanklin (Andrea); grandchildren, Vaughn Cavanaugh (Kristen), Vance Robertson (Connie), Randall Robertson (Wendy), Wesley Shanklin II (Michelle), Keith Shanklin, Heather Symmt, Jared Shanklin (Jennifer), Adam Shanklin, Carol Wallace (Greg), Darrell Shanklin (Brandi), Crystal Shanklin (Patrick), Josh Shanklin (Jennifer), Brandon Shanklin, Russell Scott, Melanie Garner (Mike), David Ireland (Lisa) and John Ireland, as well as numerous loving great grandchildren, nieces nephews and friends.

After declining health and a bad fall she needed rehabilitation and extended care. The family would like to thank Pine Crest Rehabilitation and Castle Pines Nursing Home in Lufkin, TX for the excellent care they have given to Ms. Shanklin.
