Obituary: Vol Sevier Dooley, Jr.

BOSSIER CITY – A Celebration of Life Service honoring the life of Vol S. Dooley, Jr. will be held at Cypress Baptist Church on Friday, August 15, 2014, at 11:00 a.m. The visitation will also be held at Cypress Baptist Church on Thursday, August 14, 2014, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Brother Billy Pierce will officiate and bring the message after Brother Chad Mills delivers the eulogy. Entombment will follow at Hill Crest Mausoleum with military honors.

Vol Sevier Dooley, Jr. was born on January 20, 1927, in Memphis, TN to Vol S. Dooley, Sr. and Sadie Rae Hargrove. He was a member of Airline Baptist Church and an ordained Deacon while attending Cypress Baptist Church in 1987. Mr. Dooley graduated from Missouri High School and moved to Benton, LA after being discharged from the Navy Air Corp. in 1946. He also became a Mason in the Masonic Lodge.

Vol worked for the State Police from 1950 to 1954 as a motorcycle trooper. He then left to join the Bossier Parish Sheriff’s Office; where he rose in rank and became Chief Deputy. Upon Sheriff Willie Waggoner’s untimely death, Vol was appointed Sheriff by the Governor and later won the elected position in 1976. Upon retiring from the Bossier Parish Sheriff’s Office, Sheriff Dooley worked as security director for the Caddo-Bossier Port commission until he retired.

He accepted our Lord, Jesus Christ as his Savior on January 12, 1984, while being a member of Cypress Baptist Church. To date, he was a member of Airline Baptist Church and attended Dr. Bill Bailey’s Sunday School Class.

He will always be remembered as a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and a “hero” to his family. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Mr. Dooley was preceded by his parents, Vol S. Dooley, Sr. and Sadie Dooley Hargrove, and his son, Vol “Bubba” Dooley III. He is survived by his wife, Ruth Brown Dooley, of 28 years, one brother Norm Hart and wife Theora of Chicago Ill; one daughter Patsy Netherland and husband Charles, son Steve Dooley and wife Teresa, and son Mike Dooley and wife Donna. He is survived by Ruth’s children, son Autry Brown and wife Carole, son Dennis Brown and wife Gina, and son Ricky Brown and wife Kim. Vol and wife Ruth, together have 28 grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren.

Honoring Mr. Dooley as pallbearers will be John Holt, Lamar Breedlove, Dr. Bill Bailey, Jim Tharp, J.W. Slack, and Marvin Young.
