A woman and her 2-year old granddaughter escaped unharmed from a fire inside their apartment Wednesday thanks to a working smoke detector.

The Bossier City Fire Department responded to that fire just before 11 a.m. at a quadplex at the Riverwood Apartments in the 2300 block of Riverwood Drive.

The first crews arrived within three minutes and reported flames and heavy smoke coming from the one story building which houses four separate apartments. They managed to bring the fire under control in about 10 minutes.

The fire appears to have started in a bedroom of one of the apartments where the woman and her 2-year old granddaughter lived. Both were at home at the time of the fire. The woman told fire investigators that she was alerted to the fire when she heard a smoke detector inside the apartment sound an alarm. Upon investigating the woman found flames coming from a bedroom and immediately got out of the apartment with her granddaughter.

Her apartment sustained heavy fire damage while the adjacent unit received a lesser degree of fire and smoke damage. The two other apartments received varying degrees of smoke damage.

There were no reported injuries. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
