The Ark-La-Tex Ambassador BBQ COOK-OFF has awarded six area high school seniors with college scholarships funded by the BBQ Cook-off Grillin for Grads event.
Area high school seniors submitted essays for the opportunity to win $2,500 scholarships.
The 3rd Annual Scholarship winner included Parkway High School’s Mary Kate Bozeman.
Bozeman, a Parkway High School senior, submitted her winning essay on actual experiences from her future college campus visit.
“I have signed to play softball at Millsaps College. I met with the team while there, and one of the girls had grown up in Jackson so she gave everyone a tour of the area. This experience reminds me of how helpful it is to have a native to the area show you around. I wrote about what I would tell visitors to the Ark-La-Tex based on the many things I enjoy about this community,” said Bozeman.
Other area winners are: Daniel Bacon – Byrd High School, Ashley Chandler – Captain Shreve High School, Madelyn Greenleaf – Byrd High School, Arlanda Nunsett – Huntington High School, and Mattilyn Reeder – Loyola High School.
The Ark-La-Tex Ambassadors are proud to say they have raised over $25,000 in scholarship money over the past two years. Many of the past recipients are now in their sophomore year of college, attending universities across the country. This scholarship program was born out of the BBQ Cook-off Grillin for Grads event that started in 2013 with the goal to allocate proceeds from admissions to the scholarship program.
The 3rd Annual BBQ Cook-off by the Ark-La-Tex Ambassadors is Grillin’ for Grads. Admission is only $10 and you receive three tasting tickets and one People’s Choice voting token. Admission proceeds will go towards the Ark-La-Tex Ambassadors’ college scholarship essay contest for high school seniors in the area. Festival goers will enjoy a vast selection of food, live entertainment by the Bayou Boogie Band 11:30am – 4pm, and People’s Choice voting between 12:30 – 3:00pm for an announcement of the winners at the Award Ceremony 4:00pm.
