The Parkway Panthers remained No. 2 in the latest Louisiana Sports Writers Association Class 5A rankings released Monday.
The Panthers (7-0) again received three first-place vote and tallied 111 points. Top-ranked St. Augustine (6-1) received the other seven first-place votes and had 116 points.
Parkway defeated then-No. 4 Byrd 52-29 last Friday. The Panthers improved to 3-0 in District 1-5A and can clinch a share of the title for the second straight year with a victory at Haughton Friday night.
Byrd (7-1) dropped to No. 6.
For awhile last Saturday, it looked like Parkway might ascend to the top spot.
Seventh-ranked Holy Cross rallied in the second half against St. Augustine and led 30-27. But the Purple Knights scored a late touchdown to go ahead 33-30. Holy Cross reached the St. Augustine 18 in the final seconds but a pass on the last play of the game was incomplete.
The only change at the top of any of the other classes was in 2A. Riverside dropped from No. 1 to No. 4 after losing to South Plaquemine 12-6. Loreauville (8-0) moved from No. 2 to the top spot.
The No. 1 teams in the other three classes remained the same — Neville (4A, 8-0), University (3A, 8-0) and Haynesville (1A, 8-0).
In other games involving Bossier Parish schools Friday night, Airline (4-4, 2-1 1-5A) hosts Haughton (6-2, 2-1), Benton (4-4, 3-2 1-4A) hosts Northwood (7-1, 5-0), Bossier (1-7, 0-3 1-3A) hosts Mansfield (4-4, 2-1) and Louisiana New Tech at Plain Dealing (4-4, 2-1 1-1A) visits Arcadia (2-6, 2-1).
