Prep basketball: Minden takes Haughton girls tournament title; Benton wins boys consolation


The Minden Lady Tiders won the girls division of the Haughton Jack Clayton Invitational with a 63-44 victory over the Haughton Lady Bucs on Saturday afternoon at Haughton.

The Lady Bucs hung with the Lady Tiders for a little more than a quarter before Minden’s quickness and defense started to take its toll.

Haughton led 16-15 after the first quarter, but the Lady Bucs went cold early in the second. The Lady Tiders went on a 16-6 run and led 31-22 at the half.

Minden (6-2) stretched the lead to as many as 20 in the second half. Strawberry Batton led the Lady Tiders with 22 points. Shuntorri Rodgers added 16 and Tiaga Pugh 14.

Inez Green was Haughton’s only player in double figures with 20 points. Champagne Dennis and Morgan Buxton scored eight each.

Benton won the boys consolation championship with 73-69 double overtime victory over Lakeside.

Byrd won the boys title with an 86-53 rout of North DeSoto.

Jalen Harding led the Tigers with 23 points. Jerriyun Lawrence chipped in with 17, including four 3-pointers. Jessie Little added 11 and Cameron Robinson nine.

Harding hit a 3-pointer in the overtimes and scored five points. Little and Robinson scored four each.

The Plain Dealing Lady Lions advanced to the consolation finals of the Bossier Lady Kats Invitational with a 64-46 victory over Green Oaks Saturday afternoon.

Dranautika Thomas and Laterrica Stewart led the Lady Lions with 15 points each. Damesha Noble and Teunna Perry scored 11 each. Dra Briggs added 10.
