The Mansfield Wolverines proved no match for the fifth-ranked Airline Vikings Thursday night in a non-district game at Airline Stadium.
The Vikings made it a happy homecoming with a 44-0 victory over the winless Wolverines.
Airline improved to 6-0 overall. The Vikings begin the meat of their District 1-5A schedule next week when they visit parish rival Haughton on Friday. Mansfield, a member of the District 1-3A, dropped to 0-6.
Airline rolled to 42-0 halftime lead.
Six Vikings scored — Coby McGee (21-yard run), Malik Britt (12-yard pass from Thomas McKain), DeAngelo Pouncy (28-yard interception return), Shun’Cee Thomas (1-yard run), Bryan Fielding (7-yard run) and David Maxey (10-yard run).
Airline coach Bo Meeks was able to empty his bench. Eight Vikings carried the ball. Fielding led the way with 43 yards on five carries.
McKain completed six of eight passes for 69 yards in limited action.
Gabe Rodriguez was a perfect 6-for-6 on extra-point kicks.
The defense held Mansfield to just one first down and 32 total yards, including minus-8 rushing, and recorded a safety in the quick second half.
