The Benton Lady Tigers advanced to the second round of the Division II girls soccer playoffs with a 4-0 victory over District 1 rival Haughton on Thursday night at Tinsley Park.
Benton (14-6-1), the No. 11 seed, will face No. 6 West Ouachita (12-8-5) in the second round next week. Haughton, the No. 22 seed, closed its season 4-11-1.
In a boys Division II first-round game, No. 20 Benton fell to No. 13 Tioga 1-0 at Tioga. The District 1 runner-up Tigers finished the season 14-13-2. Tioga scored the game’s only goal on a penalty kick in the first half.
The Benton-Haughton girls game was the fourth between the two this season. The Lady Tigers won all three previous matchups 8-0.
Haughton put up a better showing Thursday. After Signe Sandstrom scored in the first minute of the game for Benton, the Lady Bucs had a good chance to get even but the Lady Tigers stopped a shot in front of the goal.
Most of the action took place around the Haughton goal as Benton forced the pace. Sandstrom scored two more goals in the first half and the Lady Tigers narrowly missed a couple of more opportunities.
Georgia Carroway scored the lone goal of the second half. Hailey McGhee had an assist.
