Prep soccer: Benton sweeps Haughton; Airline girls drop Shreve; Parkway edges West Monroe

Benton swept Haughton in District 1, Division II soccer action Thursday night at Tinsley Park.

The boys won 1-0 and the girls won 8-0.

Ethan Parks, the MVP on the All-Parish team last season, scored the only goal in the boys game. Nick Sessions had an assist.

Benton coach Bryan George said Parks is playing at 100 percent for the first time all season. Parks didn’t play until Dec. 5 because of a knee injury.

The Tigers lost to West Monroe 3-1 Friday night in a non-district game. Benton is 11-9-1 overall and 4-1 in district. The Tigers trail Captain Shreve (10-2-1, 4-0) by a half game in the district standings. Shreve won the first district meeting 3-0 on Jan. 6. The Tigers and Gators meet again Jan. 25.

Braylin Shaffer had a hat trick for the Benton girls, including one on a penalty kick. Signe Sandstrom scored twice, including one on an assist from Breanna Bundy. Hailey McGhee, Georgia Carroway and Sarah Varnado also scored goals.

The Lady Tigers improved to 9-4-1 overall and 4-1 in district. Parkway (19-4-1, 5-0), which defeated West Monroe 3-2 Friday, leads the district. The Lady Panthers, ranked No. 4 in Division II, defeated Northwood 8-0 Thursday.

Airline defeated Captain Shreve 3-0 in a non-district contest Thursday. Haylie Travis scored two goals and Lindsey Donlan had one. The Airline boys lost to Shreve, ranked No. 1 in the latest Division II power rankings, 2-0.
