The high school soccer season gets underway Monday night.
There are six District 1-I boys and girls games at Tinsley Park. Haughton faces Byrd, Parkway plays Southwood and Airline meets Caddo Magnet. Games are at 6 and 7:45.
In a non-district girls opener, Bossier plays Captain Shreve at Cargill Park.
The Benton boys open the season at 7 p.m. Tuesday against Neville at Tinsley. Haughton plays Captain Shreve in a girls District 1-I game at 6.
The Benton boys are coming off an 18-6 season. The Tigers, who finished runner-up in Division I-II, advanced to the second round of the Division II playoffs where they lost to eventual state runner-up Vandebilt Catholic 3-1.
The Tigers lost All-Parish MVP Dillion Rogers, who led the area with 42 goals, to graduation. Senior defender JB Mercer and junior midfielder Sam Vickrey were All-Parish selections last season.
The Airline boys finished third in District I-I last season. The Vikings finished 14-9-1 after falling to Mandeville in the first round of the Division I playoffs. Junior defender Gabe Rodriguez and senior defender Esteban Guevara were All-Parish selections last season. Gin Pau was impressive in two scrimmages last week.
The Parkway girls finished tied for second in District I-I and then upset No. 12 seed Acadiana 3-2 in the first round of the Division I playoffs. The Lady Panthers finished 13-7-2 after falling to eventual semifinalist Dominican 3-0 in the second round.
Junior defender Miranda Scotten, the All-Parish MVP, leads the list of returnees. The Lady Panthers return three other All-Parish players — junior midfielder Sara Funderburk, senior defender Liz Knight and sophomore forward Mackenzie Kleinpeter.
Other underclassmen who made first-team All-Parish last season were Airline forward Savannah Howell, Benton jmidfielder Abby Lauterbach and Airline’s Rebecca Shumate.
Howell, Haylie Travis, Mandy Kay Sparkman, Peyton Brown and Anna Grace Barkley all scored goals for the Airline girls in a scrimmage last week.
Hannah Logan, Henry Leist, Paige Hendrix and Sydney Post scored goals in the Haughton girls’ scrimmage against Bossier last week. Makalyn Lewis had an assist. Lauren Thompkins, Kailey Viking and Elizabeth Langley split time at goalkeeper and allowed no goals.
