Ruston, LA – Ruston Mayor Ronny Walker, now serving the city in his third term and deeply involved in the economic growth and civic well-being of both Ruston and Lincoln Parish for more than 40 years, will serve as keynote speaker for Louisiana Tech University’s Summer Commencement ceremonies Saturday, August 15, at 10 a.m. at the Thomas Assembly Center on the Ruston campus.
Doors open one hour before the ceremony; tickets are not required.
Family and friends unable to attend commencement can watch the events via Facebook Live.
Building and strengthening the partnership with Louisiana Tech has been one of Walker’s highest priorities since voters elected him as mayor on November 4, 2014. His efforts were formally recognized in 2019 when he was presented with the Arlis Scogin Award, the highest honor Tech can bestow for extraordinary service to the University by a non-graduate.
“The partnership between the City of Ruston and Louisiana Tech University continues to make our community stronger,” Walker said. “It is a privilege to celebrate the achievements of this remarkable graduating class.”
During his first term in office in 2015, Walker championed the “Moving Ruston Forward” sales tax initiative, which funded more than $250 million in infrastructure improvements that has led to more than $900 million in private projects over the next three years throughout the city. Besides the Ruston Sports Complex and improvement in relationships with both state and federal leaders that have produced more than $70 million in grants, the snowball effect of Moving Ruston Forward continues to be evidenced in several major ongoing projects, including Buc-cee’s, the Willis Knighton Health Center, and the Radiance Technologies microchip factory.
To help define his vision for the City that surrounds Tech, Walker coined “Excellence Made Here,” a phrase that has been embraced and continues to be illustrated with continued improvements and enhancements in infrastructure, quality of life, and the growing partnership with Tech, a major catalyst for economic growth and workforce development.
