Sci-Port to reopen June 16

After being closed more than 10 days due to flood waters, Sci-Port will reopen its doors Tuesday

Sci-Port will be open to the public again on Tuesday, June 16, with normal operating hours after the Red River made its way around the building Friday, June 5.

By Sunday, June 7, the north parking lot was completely underwater, along with Clyde Fant Parkway, giving no public access to the building. Sci-Port has been closed since.

“We, along with many of our visitors, felt disappointment at having to close operations. In addition to having to cancel programming, we felt the closure financially. Having to close business for any amount of time hurts the bottom line,” said Ann Fumarolo, President/CEO of Sci-Port. “We’re thrilled to be back open doing what we do.”

Although the north parking lot will remain empty until cleaned of river mud and debris, the Lake Street parking lot is currently accessible for Sci-Port visitors coming from Clyde Fant Parkway.

This Friday, June 19, Sci-Port will host its “Last Annual River and Blues Event,” marking its reopening after more than a week of being closed. The event offers blues music by local band Kings of Pleasure, food, and a cash bar. The rooftop and solarium offer some of the best views of the Red River in all of Shreveport, and will give attendees a chance to see the river as it recedes.

River and Blues tee-shirts and panoramic posters picturing Sci-Port at the Red River crest are for sale through Eventbrite. Proceeds will help offset the revenue lost during the closure. Tickets for the event may also be pre-purchased through Eventbrite.

Sci-Port is thankful for all those who helped it continue serving the community during the flooding. “We’d like to thank the Shreveport Convention Center and Bossier Pierre Mall for providing us space to continue summer camps and our science programming. We could not have done it without them,” said Fumarolo.

The much-anticipated Jurassic Week has been rescheduled for Monday, June 22-Sunday, June 28. Programming will include reptilian and avian dissections, fossil-making, and a Center-wide Jurassic Safari. The winner of the safari will receive a family 4-pack of tickets to see Jurassic World, courtesy of Cinemark Tinseltown.
