Shreve Memorial Library has partnered with United Way of Northwest Louisiana (UWNWLA) to hold collection drives at each of their Shreveport City branches for Hurricane Ida evacuees. See below for a list of the urgent items being collected and participating Shreve Memorial Library locations.
As of September 1, more than 300 evacuees with specialized medical needs from South Louisiana began their journey to Northwest Louisiana to seek shelter from the aftereffects of Hurricane Ida. These individuals are seeking refuge at the Special Needs & Medical Shelter at the Bossier Civic Center. All items donated will be delivered to that location and to the evacuees at the Jewella Mega-Shelter.
“We are blessed to have Shreve Memorial Library in our corner during this crisis,” said Dr. Bruce Willson Jr., UWNWLA President & CEO. “With the influx of evacuees headed to Northwest Louisiana, Shreve Memorial Library is aiding us by offering more avenues for individuals to provide essential items. The citizens of Shreveport, Bossier City, and surrounding areas are giving people, and I want to thank them for what they have already done and what they’re going to do.”
“Shreve Memorial Library is glad to be able to join other organizations in giving back and helping those during this crisis,” stated John Tuggle, Shreve Memorial Library Executive Director, adding “the people of Northwest Louisiana always step up to help others in times of need, and we are glad to be able to join them in these efforts.”
Monetary donations are also being accepted through UWNWLA’s emergency response fund. UWNWLA initially launched the United for NWLA Fund in 2020 to assist families and individuals impacted financially by the effects of COVID-19. The fund later expanded to provide assistance to families displaced to Northwest Louisiana due to Hurricane Laura. Donations to the United for NWLA Fund will now be used to support Hurricane Ida evacuees sheltering in Northwest Louisiana. Any unused funds will be donated to United Ways in South Louisiana to help support their long-term disaster relief efforts.
