Soccer: Airline a ‘perfect fit’ for new girls coach

Walt Peoples, the head boys soccer coach at Parkway the last nine seasons, has been named head girls coach at Airline.

Peoples compiled a 127-70-15 record at Parkway. Under his guidance, the Panthers won six district titles and reached the playoffs seven times. His 2010 team reached the quarterfinals of the Division II playoffs and his 2011 squad made it to the Division II semifinals.

Peoples was named the District 1, Division II Coach of the Year in 2008, 2010 and 2011.

“I was lucky enough to work with some of the best players from the area — Todd Faulkinberry, Ben Barcelona, Ryan Barcelona and recently Joe Alvarado,” Peoples said. “The coaches and administrators are wonderful, but I felt like I need a change both personally professionally.”

Parkway went 10-9-2 last season and finished fifth in District 1, Division I.
Peoples will be taking over an Airline girls squad that went 9-10-1 and finished fourth in District I, Division I. The Lady Vikings did not make the playoffs.

Peoples is a full-time employee at Cope Middle School, a feeder school for Airline.
“Airline is just a perfect fit, providing the opportunity to build relationships in and around the community I live and work. And I’m looking forward to the challenge.”

This won’t be the first time Peoples has worked with female athletes.

“I started out coaching girls basketball before going to NSU and working with the women’s soccer program,” he said.

Peoples has participated in the Centenary College Soccer Camp each summer since 2010.

He has also been a staff coach with the Texas Football Club where he worked with under-11 and under-18 boys teams.
