The Haughton Buccaneers and Benton Tigers posted big district victories this week.
The Bucs downed the Parkway Panthers 4-2 in a District 1, Division I game Tuesday at Tinsley Park.
The Tigers edged the Loyola Flyers 2-1 Thursday in a District 1-II game at Loyola’s Messmer Stadium.
Haughton’s victory may have been an historic one. Kyle Wilkerson is in his second year as head soccer coach at Haughton, but he’s been a coach at the school for 17 years.
“I’m not sure if we have ever beaten them,” Wilkerson said in an email. “I know it has not happened in the 17 years I’ve been here.”
Benny Broadway led the Bucs (5-6, 2-3) with two goals and an assist. He now has 14 goals and six assists on the season.
Kade Schufft had one goal and an assist. Colby Sabrowski also scored a goal.
Parkway dropped to 6-8-1 and 2-4.
Benton’s victory over Loyola was only its second in district play, but it could go a long way toward determining the champion. Loyola has a traditionally strong soccer program.
Ethan Whitehead and Dillon Rogers had one goal and one assist for the Tigers (12-2, 2-0). Ethan Parks had an assist.
Benton is now the only team in the district without a loss. Loyola dropped to 8-5 overall and 3-1.
In a non-district boys game Tuesday night, Bossier fell to Southwood 3-1. Alex Galvan had the Bearkats’ lone goal.
The Parkway Lady Panthers picked up two shutout District 1-I victories this week, 8-0 over Haughton Tuesday and 4-0 over Captain Shreve Thursday.
Sara Funderburk led Parkway (8-5-2, 6-2) with two goals. Miranda Scotten scored one goal and assisted on two others. Madeline Wheel-ahan scored a goal, and Taylor Gilbreath had an assist.
