Softball: Airline downs Byrd, moves into first in 1-5A; Benton rolls past Magnet

The Airline Lady Vikings took sole possession of first place in District 1-5A softball with a 12-4 victory over the Byrd Lady Jackets Tuesday night at Airline.

The Vikings improved to 13-3 overall and 5-1 in 1-5A. The win combined with Parkway’s 11-1 loss to Evangel Christian at Parkway gave Airline the district lead. The Lady Panthers dropped to 9-6 overall and 5-2 in district. Evangel improved to 4-2 in district.

Parkway has entered the second half of district play with ace Samantha Guile and No. 2 pitcher Allie Hunt both battling injuries. Guile, a Southern Utah signee, did not pitch against Evangel.

In another 1-5A game, Haughton suffered its second tough loss in as many nights, 13-12, to Captain Shreve in eight innings at Shreve.

In District 1-4A, the Benton Lady Tigers rolled past Caddo Magnet 15-0 in four innings at Benton.

At Airline, Kaitlyn Walker continued her hot streak at the plate, going 3-for-5 with a double and an RBI. Pitcher Hannah Hutson helped her own cause, going 2-for-4 with a double and three RBI. Kelci Johnson had two hits and an RBI.

Freshman Maddie Ennis, Airline’s leading hitter on the season, didn’t get a hit for the first time all season. But she only had one official at-bat and reached base three times via walks.

Kaylee Adams and Jessica Baffuto had one hit and one RBI each. Hutson scattered eight hits and struck out eight.

Byrd dropped to 6-10 overall and 3-3 in district.

At Shreve, Haughton broke a 9-9 tie with three runs in the top of the seventh. But Shreve came back with three in the bottom of the inning to tie it. The Lady Gators then pushed across a run in the bottom of the eighth to win it.

Haughton had 15 hits. Lacey Dodson went 3-for-4 with a double and three RBI. Kaytlyn Guerrero also had three hits. Sidney Arnold went 2-for-3. Keeleigh Bennett had a double and three RBI. Savannah Salley and Shelby Hensley had a double and two RBI each.

At Benton, Abby Kent had three doubles and four RBI for the Lady Tigers, who imrproved to 9-8 overall and 2-1 in 1-4A. Makenzie Chaffin went 3-for-3 with two RBI. Sarah Koeppen had two doubles and two RBI. Angel Fort and Abi Cole had a double and two RBI each. Hallie Saintignan had two RBI.

Koeppen and Ashley Hunter combined on a one-hitter.

At Parkway, Kendall Lewis and Abbie Norcross had the Lady Panthers’ only hits. Norcross’ was a double.
