Softball: Airline hands Parkway first 1-5A loss; Benton splits games

Hannah Hutson pitched a five-inning, two-hitter as the Airline Lady Vikings handed the Parkway Lady Panthers their first District 1-5A loss 10-0 on Monday evening at Airline.

Airline improved to 12-3 overall and 4-1 in 1-5A. The Lady Vikings haven’t completed the first half of district play because the Captain Shreve game was rained out and has been rescheduled for April 1. The Lady Vikings host defending champion Byrd Tuesday. Airline won the first district meeting 11-1.

Parkway dropped to 9-5 overall. The Lady Panthers completed the first half of district play 5-1. Parkway begins the second half at home against Evangel Tuesday. The Lady Panthers defeated the Lady Eagles 3-1 in the first meeting.

Airline’s Maddie Ennis continued her outstanding freshman season against Parkway, going 3-for-4 with a home run and four RBI. Kaitlyn Walker, who has also been a consistent hitter this season, went 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBI.

Hutson went 2-for-2. Kelci Johnson and Kaylee Adams both had RBIs.

Kendall Lewis and Allie Hunt had Parkway’s only hits.

Elsewhere Monday, Benton split two games. The Lady Tigers lost to defending Class 4A state and district champion North DeSoto 6-2 and then defeated Captain Shreve 11-6 in a non-district game. Both were makeup games.

Benton is 8-8 overall and 1-1 in District 1-4A. The Lady Tigers host Caddo Magnet in a district game Tuesday.

Sarah Koeppen hit two home runs and had three RBI against Captain Shreve. She also pitched a five-hitter with 10 strikeouts.

Abby Kent went 3-for-4 with a home run and four RBI. Abi Cole also knocked one out of the park and added a single. Hallie Saintignan went 2-for-4. Makenzie Chaffin and Ashley Hunter had doubles.

Chaffin had three hits, including a double. against North DeSoto. Saintignan went 2-for-4 with a double. Ashley Hunter had two hits and turned in a solid performance on the mound. She scattered six hits and struck out five. Siara Erickson had a double.

North DeSoto broke open a tight game with four runs in the fifth. Benton had its chances. The Lady Tigers left the bases loaded in the fourth and the seventh.

The Haughton Lady Bucs fell to Southwood 10-9 in a District 1-5A heartbreaker. The Lady Cowboys scored six runs in the bottom of the seventh, including a grand slam home run, to rally for the victory.

Haughton, which has struggled at the plate lately, pounded out 15 hits. Courtney Garrett went 3-for-4. Lacey Dodson, Savannah Salley, Shelby Henson and Sidney Arnold had two hits apiece. Dodson and Hensley had doubles as did Jordan Brothers.

The Lady Bucs visit Captain Shreve Tuesday.
