Softball: Benton loses heartbreaker in second round of 4A playoffs


The Benton Lady Tigers, seeded No. 24, lost a 2-1 heartbreaker to No. 5 Assumption in the second round of the Class 4A softball playoffs on Sunday in Napoleonville.

Assumption scored the winning run on a bases-loaded single in the bottom of the seventh inning.

The Lady Mustangs took a 1-0 lead in the third inning. The Lady Tigers tied it with a run in the top of the fourth.

Abi Cole reached on an error, advanced to second on a fielder’s choice and scored on Yancey Cox’s single.

Cox and Savannah Collo had the Lady Tigers’ only hits. Benton pitchers also turned in strong performances. Mackenzie Stewart allowed one hit in four innings. Sarah Koeppen kept the Lady Mustangs off the scoreboard until the seventh.

Benton finished the season 14-13.
