Softball: Parkway hands Haughton first 1-5A loss; Airline wins; Benton splits

The Parkway Lady Panthers handed the Haughton Lady Bucs their first District 1-5A loss 9-4 Tuesday at Haughton.

Haughton dropped to 14-6 overall and 8-1 in 1-5A. The Bucs can move back into a share of the lead Wednesday with a victory at Byrd, which improved to 7-0 with a 4-2 win over Southwood Tuesday.

Parkway improved to 15-10 overall and 8-2 in 1-5A. The Panthers came into the game ranked No. 30 in the latest LHSAA Class 5A power rankings. The top 32 teams generally make the playoffs and the win over Haughton should improve Parkway’s ranking.

The Lady Panthers still have four games left, including district games against Byrd and Airline.

Elsewhere, Airline knocked off Captain Shreve 10-5 in a District 1-5A game at Airline and Benton split 1-4A home games, defending Minden 16-1 and falling to Northwood 8-5.

At Haughton, Mary Kate Bozeman had a big day for Parkway, going 4-for-4 with a triple, double and three RBI. She got plenty of help from her teammates, though.

Samantha Guile turned in another outstanding performance on the mound, allowing six hits and striking out 10.

The Lady Panthers scored a run in every inning but the sixth. They took an 8-0 lead with three in the top of the fifth. Bryant singled in the inning and Lewis and Bozeman doubled.

At Airline, Kaitlyn Walker went 4-for-4 with a triple and two doubles to lead the Vikings. Kaylee Adams had three hits, including two doubles. Olivia Broussard, Brittany Nelson and Kelci Johnson all had two hits. Broussard and Hannah Hutson had doubles.

Katie Briggs allowed just three hits in five innings and struck out four. Hutson had four strikeouts in two innings.

At Benton, Mackenzie Stewart pitched a four-inning one-hitter in the win over Minden. She also had two doubles and four RBI. Chelsea Rangel went 3-for-3 with a double and two RBI. Hallie Saintignan had a two-RBI triple. Yancey Cox went 2-for-3.

Benton and Northwood went into the seventh inning tied at 5. The Lady Falcons scored the go-ahead run on a home run in the top of the inning and then added two more.
