While they normally serve up hamburgers, hot dogs and slushes, two Bossier Parish Sonic Drive-In locations made a special donation Monday afternoon that will help feed those in need throughout the parish.

The “Support the Blue” fundraiser was held at 17 area Sonic locations Sept. 24 to show support for law enforcement and honor slain Shreveport Police Officer Thomas LaValley and area officers.  Bossier deputies joined cooks, car hops and customers that afternoon to help foster the relationship between law enforcement and the community.

“Our businesses wouldn’t be here, our families wouldn’t be safe, so we asked our customers, ‘Hey, come and support law enforcement’,” said Paul Reiser.  “And you know what – they came out by the thousands.”

It’s a message heard loud and clear by those who wear the blue.

“Letting our guys and gals know that they are appreciated…it’s a tough job, but people realize what they do and appreciate it,” said a very grateful Sheriff Whittington.

“Support the Blue” was an idea that Rebecca Stinson of Reiser Group Sonic developed following recent news events concerning law enforcement officers.

“Unfortunately, police officers around the country – a lot of them – have been killed on duty,” said Stinson.  “So it just sparked something in my heart to show our support for our local law enforcement, because I knew they really needed it…and especially Officer Thomas LaValley in Shreveport.”

Stinson also noted the $1,000 donated to the Bossier Sheriff’s Office Monday was raised solely at the Haughton and Benton Sonic locations during the “Support the Blue” fundraiser last month.

“It is so encouraging to see the support of our area businesses, organizations and residents, and we are truly grateful for their backing of our deputies and area law enforcement,” said Sheriff Whittington.  “We thank Sonic for their contribution to Operation Blessing, which helps feed about 450 families each month.  Their donation will also help us fill our special Christmas food boxes so that residents can enjoy a hearty holiday meal this Christmas.”
