Teen dies in drowning accident at Cypress Black Bayou

A teenage boy died Sunday afternoon during a drowning accident in Cypress Black Bayou near the Palmetto boat launch on Old Palmetto Road in Benton.

SheriffLogoBossier Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the scene just before 6 p.m. after they were notified a young teenager had jumped into the water and did not resurface.

The boy and two friends had apparently crossed the fence at the boat launch area and went to the flood gate where the boy jumped.  He yelled to the two others that he couldn’t swim, and they jumped in to try and help him.

The Bossier Sheriff’s Office dive team quickly came to the scene, and they recovered the unresponsive boy around 7 p.m.

The Bossier Parish Coroner also responded, and the Bossier Sheriff’s Office chaplain has contacted next of kin.

“This appears to be a tragic accident, and I ask you to please keep the family of this young boy in your thoughts and prayers,” said Bossier Sheriff Julian Whittington.
