One-year-old Toby is a small dog with a big heart.
The pup from south Bossier took home the top prize at the annual Labor Day wiener dog races at Harrah’s Louisiana Downs, defeating two-time champ Ollie in a speedy race. Along with a trophy, Toby won a year’s worth of grooming at Doggy Wood and a jar full of treats.

Toby is owned by John and Bonnie Merchant of Bossier City. The couple rescued him when he was just a few months old.
Bonnie says they entered the race simply for fun and because they noticed how fast he runs laps at home. She said they definitely plan to defend their first place spot at next year’s race.
Proceeds from this year’s event went to Ninna’s Road to Rescue, a non-profit located in Benton. The event raised more than $2,600 for the rescue group, whose mission is to rescue and re-home small breed dogs, to include senior dogs and dogs in kill shelters.
