Track and field: Season gets underway Thursday with annual Shamocus Patton Benton Tiger Relays

The high school track and field season gets underway Thursday with the annual Benton Tiger Shamocus Patton Relays at Tiger Stadium.

All Bossier Parish teams except Airline are expected to compete. Other schools expected to vie for the boys and girls titles are Cedar Creek, Lakeside, Mansfield, North DeSoto, Ouachita Christian, Ouachita Parish, West Monroe, West Ouachita, Franklin Parish and St Mary’s.

Field events start at 3 p.m. and running events at 4. Last year’s meet was cancelled because of inclement weather.

Two of the four Bossier Parish athletes who won state titles last season return.

Parkway’s Sara Funderburk won the Class 5A girls 3,200-meter run and finished runner-up in the 800.

Plain Dealing’s Keldrick was named the Outstanding Performer in Class 1A boys at the state meet at LSU.
He won the triple jump, finished second in the 110 hurdles and third in the long jump.

Haughton’s Antonio Woodfork, who finished second in the Class 5A 300 hurdles last year, is also back. Plain Dealing’s Teunna Perry, the runner-up in the Class 1A girls triple jump, and Benton’s Collin Milton, the third-place finisher in the Class 4A boys javelin, were also underclassmen last season.

Haughton is the two-time defending District 1-5A boys champions. The Bucs also finished runner-up in the Region I-4A meet.

Benton swept the District 1-4A boys and girls titles last season for the fourth straight year. The boys also won the Region I-4A championships and the girls finished runner-up.
