Update: BCPD continues to investigate officer involved shooting

The Bossier City Police Department continues to investigate an officer involved shooting stemming from an incident that occurred around 2:30am Saturday morning near the intersection of Barksdale Blvd. and Westgate Drive (main entrance/gate to Barksdale Air Force Base). The incident occurred when BCPD pulled over a Chevy Camero for a traffic stop at which time a passenger in the vehicle (Mark Wortham, age 20, of Springhill, LA) pointed a handgun at the BCPD officer as the officer approached the vehicle on foot. At that point, the officer discharged his service weapon striking Wortham.

In keeping with standard protocol/procedure in these situations, the officer (whose name has yet to be released) has been placed on administrative leave pending the investigation of this matter. Also, no further word has been released regarding the condition of Wortham, who was originally reported to be in critical, but stable condition.

The Bossier City Police Department is investigating an officer involved shooting that occurred overnight at the intersection of Barksdale Boulevard and Westgate Drive.
The incident happened at approximately 2:30 a.m. Saturday after an officer assigned to the patrol division stopped a Chevrolet Camero occupied by two male subjects.
As the officer approached the car on foot from his patrol vehicle, the passenger, later identified as Malik Wortham, 20, of Springhill, Louisiana pointed a handgun at the officer at which time the officer fired his service weapon with one round striking Wortham. Bossier City Fire Department personnel transported Wortham to University Health where he was listed in critical but stable condition however his wound does not appear to be life threatening. The officer was not injured.
Wortham faces charges of attempted first degree murder and convicted felon in possession of a firearm.
The driver of the car, Nathan Clay Birdwell, 17, of Sarepta, Louisiana was taken into custody and arrested on a charge of marijuana possession after officers located suspected marijuana inside the vehicle.
The officer, whose name is not being release at this time, has been placed on administrative leave pending investigations by the Internal Affairs Division and Criminal Investigations Division, which are standard procedures in officer involved shootings. The investigations remain ongoing.
