Wrestling: Parkway wins Rayne tournament; two Airline wrestlers take Louisiana Classic titles

The Parkway Panthers won the Rayne Invitational wrestling tournament last week.
Parkway scored 281 points to 250 for runner-up Rayne. Basile was third with 220.
Meanwhile, Airline’s Christian Walden and Javarious “JuJu” Jones won titles in the Louisiana Classic meet at Baton Rouge Community College.
Airline finished ninth out of 43 teams with only eight wrestlers competing.
Parkway’s Trevor Tamburo, Ryan Huckaby and Nathan Pitts all won individual titles in the Rayne meet.
Toby Fontenot and Levar Allen were runners-up in their respective weight divisions.
Tamburo defeated Mason Gonzalez of East Ascension by an 11-1 decision in the 120-pound weight class finals.
Huckaby pinned TJ Broussard of Kaplan in 3:34 in the 145-pound finals.
Pitts improved to 19-0 with an 11-1 decision over Trey Hebert of Teurlings Catholic in the 152-pound class title match.
Fontenot fell to George Femmer of Teurlings Catholic 12-6 in the 132-pound finals
Allen lost to Trae Case of Kaplan by fall in 1:36 in the 160-pound class.
Other Panthers who had good finishes were Dalton Driggers (third, 138); Zachary Harper (fourth, 106); Trey Fontenot (fourth, 126); David Morales (4th, 182); Conner Cloinger (fifth, 195) and Dakota Dean (sixth, 170).
At the Louisiana Classic, Jones won his first three matches by fall and then edged Shane Ulfers of St. Paul’s 7-6 in the quarterfinals. He then pinned Stephen Rumney of Brother Martin in 3:08 in the finals to improve to 39-3.
Walden pinned his first four opponents before defeating Jacob Fereday of Catholic 10-5 in the championship match. He raised his record to 39-1.
Other Airline wrestlers who posted good finishes were Joshua Partin (sixth, 134); Tucker Almond (eight, 115) and Darrell Evans (eighth, 172).
Walden and Pitts both won state championships last year.
This year’s state meet is Feb. 12-13 at the CenturyLink Center.
The Northwest Louisiana Regional Tournament is Jan. 30 at North DeSoto. The Parish Championships meet is Feb. 6 at Cope Middle School.
