The Benton Rotary Club hosted a night filled with humor and heartfelt purpose on Saturday, Jan. 4, 2025, as they roasted state Rep. Dodie Horton during their annual fundraising event. Known for her dedication to North Louisiana, Horton was selected by the club as this year’s guest of honor for the lighthearted roast that brought the community together in laughter and fellowship. Lisa Johnson, president and CEO of the Bossier Chamber of Commerce, served as the emcee for the event, which was held at the Hilton Garden Inn in Bossier City.
“The Benton Rotary Club chose Dodie Horton to roast because she has been an outstanding representative for North Louisiana and is beloved by many,” said Dwayne A. Gates, president of the Benton Rotary Club. “Roasting Dodie will be a fun night of laughter and good fellowship.”
While the event was lighthearted, its purpose was deeply meaningful. Proceeds from the roast will fund several of the Rotary Club’s key initiatives, including:
- Scholarships for local high school students.
- Sponsorship of high school leaders to attend the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) Camp.
- Contributions to the global fight to eradicate polio.
- Other ongoing humanitarian projects undertaken by the Benton Rotary Club.
By blending humor with philanthropy, the roast underscores the club’s commitment to supporting youth and fostering positive change within the community.
The roast of Dodie Horton continues a longstanding Benton Rotary Club tradition of roasting notable community leaders. Past honorees include:
- Henry Burns, former state representative.
- Bobby Edmiston, tax assessor.
- Billy Pierce, pastor at Cypress Baptist Church.
- Jane Smith, former state representative.
These events have not only provided entertainment but have also raised significant funds for the Rotary’s community service programs, making a lasting impact locally and globally.
The Benton Rotary Club, part of Rotary International’s District 6190, is one of the fastest-growing clubs in the district. Its 26 members come from diverse professional and personal backgrounds, including business owners, real estate agents, retired legislators, and blue-collar workers. The club prides itself on fostering fellowship while championing humanitarian causes at home and abroad.
The Dodie Horton roast was another shining example of the Benton Rotary Club’s ability to unite the community for a great cause, using laughter as a vehicle for meaningful impact.
