High school baseball: Airline rallies past Ouachita Parish in 10 innings

The Airline Vikings defeated Ouachita Parish 10-2 in 10 innings on a very cold Thursday in Monroe. The game was part of the Trey Altick Prep Classic. 

The Vikings took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third. The Lions answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning. It remained a one-run game through six.

Airline tied it in the top of the seventh. Ayden Hawn laid down a bunt with one out. Jack Henry Smith’s single moved him to third. Drew Robinson scored Hawn with a sacrifice bunt.

Ouachita put a runner on second in the bottom of the inning with two outs. Robinson induced a popup to end the threat.

The Vikings loaded the bases with one out in the eighth but couldn’t get a run across. Robinson sat the Lions down in order in the bottom of the inning.

Airline left runners at second and third in the top of the ninth. Ouachita got a single in the bottom but that was it.

The Vikings took advantage of three walks, two wild pitches, a hit-by-pitch, an error and three singles to score eight in the top of the 10th.

Brock Jordan had two singles in the inning. Leo Heng had one. Smith had a sacrifice fly.

Airline starter Heng allowed three hits in six innings. He struck out five and walked five.

Robinson allowed two hits, struck out four and walked one in three innings. Drake Bellew struck out the side in the 10th.

Jordan, Hawn, Smith and Heng all finished with two hits.

Airline (2-2) continues play in the tournament against D’Arbonne Woods at 4:30 p.m. Friday in Farmerville.

Elsewhere Thursday, Parkway fell to defending non-select Division V state champion Quitman 4-3 at Parkway.

The Panthers (2-1) trailed 4-1 going into the bottom of the seventh and a rally came up just short.

Trent Howard went 2-for-3. Starter Abel Thetford allowed three hits in 5 2/3 innings. He struck out eight and walked two. Colby Donaldson allowed two hits and no runs in 1 1/3 innings of relief.

The cold weather caused some schedule changes.

Haughton is starting a three-game series Friday at 4 against Sterlington on the road. The teams will play a doubleheader at Haughton Saturday at noon.

Benton is playing two games in the Northwood tournament Friday at Northwood. The Tigers will face Natchitoches Central at 3:30 and Northwood at 5:30.
