High school baseball: Airline, Haughton shut out opponents in 1-5A openers

The Airline Vikings and Haughton Bucs opened District 1-5A play with shutout victories Wednesday.

Airline defeated Evangel Christian 10-0 in five innings at Airline, and Haughton downed Natchitoches Central 7-0 in Natchitoches.

In a non-district game, Parkway defeated Homer 16-1 in three innings at Parkway.

At Airline, Jack Henry Smith pitched a one-hitter with four strikeouts and four walks.

The Vikings led 5-0 after four innings then ended the game with five in the bottom of the fourth.

Brock Jordan, Bo Carter and Austin Smith had consecutive singles in the fourth. Silas Endris had a sacrifice bunt. Leo Heng had a sacrifice fly.

Jordan went 3-for-3 with a triple and four RBI. Austin Smith went 2-for-3. Jack Horton had two RBI.

Airline (7-5), which has won four in a row, and Evangel (7-4), which had a four-game winning streak snapped, are scheduled to compete the series Thursday at Evangel at 6.

At Natchitoches Central, Seth Jorstad pitched a two-hitter with six strikeouts.

The Bucs led 2-0 through five innings then scored four in the top of the sixth. 

Haughton took advantage of seven walks Christian Turner and JP Cormier both drew two.

Justin Adkison was 2-for-3 with a triple and three RBI.

Haughton (9-3), which has won four in a row, and Natchitoches Central (8-3) are scheduled to complete the series Thursday at Haughton at 5.

At Parkway, 10 Panthers combined for 11 hits. Abel Thetford went 2-for-2 with two RBI. Trent Howard and Jax Thomson had two RBI each. 

Dallas Loche and Maddox Cockerham both doubled.

Zach Plunkett allowed one hit, struck out six and walked none in two innings. Carsen Barringer struck out the side in the top of the third.

Parkway (4-6) is scheduled to open District 1-5A play against defending champion Captain Shreve Saturday at 1.
