High school baseball: Haughton, Benton, Airline bound for playoffs; Bucs, Tigers receive first-round byes

The Benton Tigers, Haughton Bucs and Airline Vikings have qualified for the LHSAA non-select Division I playoffs. Official pairings were announced Tuesday.

No. 4 seed Haughton (28-6) and No. 5 Benton (31-3) received byes in the first round. 

The District 1-5A runner-up Bucs will host the winner of a three-game series between No. 13 Covington (22-8) and No. 20 Sulphur (16-18) in the second round next week.

The 1-5A champion Tigers will host the winner of a series between No. 12 Ruston (23-11) and No. 21 Hahnville (22-12) next week.

If Benton and Haughton win their second-round series they will face off in the quarterfinals at Haughton.

No. 23 seed Airline (20-14) travels to Geismar for a first-round series against No. 10 Dutchtown (23-11). First-round series can begin as early as Wednesday but most are played on Friday and Saturday.

For the first time, there will best-of-three series throughout the playoffs in Divisions I, II and III. The championship series are scheduled for May 15-17 in Sulphur.

Benton reached the semifinals last season as the No. 13 seed. The Tigers fell to No. 1 seed Barbe 4-1.

Haughton was the No. 19 seed last year. The Bucs dropped a first-round series against No. 14 Walker two games to one.

Airline is back in the playoffs after a two-year absence.
